I love this post! I'm a city girl too, and have discovered that I love going to "pick" things. Apples, apricots, tomatoes, walnuts. All of it gives us a better appreciation of where our food comes from and what lengths someone has to go through to get it to us.

I found your blog through David Lebovitz. I am not sure I would say that Saffron grows plentifully in Provence. It definitely grows but there are only a couple of producers in Provence based upon my research. We visited L'Aube Safran in Le Barroux during harvest this year and wrote about our visit on our blog http://sablethouse.blogspot.com/2011/11/laube-safran-saffron-farm-in-provence.html

WOW what a fascinating story!
Eons ago I picked up a box of safron in Shiraz, Iran.
Not till I got home did I realize it was mostly filled with cellophane pressing the few strands against the window of the little box.
so why can't ppl grow their own crocuses?
Must be like truffles...requiring special soil, special sun etc.
